GHOST WORK SERIES

Ghost Works

I have been asked many times: What do my sculptures look like?. Now, as the artist, that should be an easy question to answer. However, I have never even attempted to draw a verbal image that would inform or produce a usable picture for the person asking the question.

The Ghost Sculptures I make are made from Marine Stainless Steel, so I can start by explaining the different bases I use. Most are a series of turned forms with flat tops and a rounded exterior. These generally graduate from larger to smaller sizes with different shapes of curved turning on the edges.

Are you still with me? Moving on.... These sit, usually on top of a carved millstone to give the works a separation from the earth, and I think they look great sitting on these weathered beasts. Now it gets a little more confusing.

On top of the bases sit interesting pierced stainless-steel forms, and often within these shapes rests a gilt stainless-steel sphere. I could stop here and ask you to enjoy the works as beautiful sculptures, but what makes these installations unique is the 6mm stainless-steel rodwork that rises from the base around the interior sculpture.

Up to 12-30, 5-meter-long rods are used which are joined together mechanically with no welding, to keep the work very crisp and let me work down to .3 mm tolerances and without producing any messy welds or heat staining that would need to be cleaned and polished.

They reach upwards, swirling and intersecting, before plunging back to the base. These rods form very complex patterns and shapes that catch the light and reflect it in ever-changing spots and lines or brilliant reflections.

When you work with a highly reflective round rod and then curve and twist it, there is no place for the light to hide. There are always spots of perfectly angled reflections as the sun moves; these spots of reflected light dance to an unfathomable tune. You have experienced shadows and light in works of art, but these works redefine the concept of reflected light.

The problem: there are no other works of art that look like my Ghost Sculptures, so I cannot refer you to any other place or work in art history. Please get in touch for more information.
